Biography

Prof. dr Grzegorz Materna is a recognized and leading competition law practitioner, who headed the Polish Competition Authority’s Department of Competition Protection for six years before joining Hansberry Tomkiel. He is a solicitor and a member of the Warsaw Chamber of Legal Advisors, as well as an Associate Professor of the Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (INP PAN).

Mr Materna has invaluable knowledge and experience resulting from his direct involvement in carrying out investigatory proceedings at all levels and drafting decisions on behalf of the Chairman of the Competition Authority. Mr Materna oversaw investigations and proceedings in matters of horizontal and vertical anticompetitive agreements, cartels and abuses of dominance. He organized and participated in inspections and searches carried out by the Authority and represented it in cases before the Competition and Consumer Protection Court as well as the Court of Appeals.

Since joining Hansberry Tomkiel, Mr Materna has showed himself to be a superb practitioner, who is trusted and appreciated by clients of the Firm. He possesses the unusual capability of combining his vast knowledge and experience in EU and Polish competition law with creative and successful approaches to the cases of our clients. Mr Materna has represented clients in proceedings before the: Polish Competition Authority; Electronic Communication Authority, Polish Courts and EU Court of Justice. His private practice experience also covers assistance during the Competition Authority’s “dawn-raids”.

Mr Materna combines his practice of competition law with a passion for legal science. He wrote or collaborated on over one hundred publications on Polish and European competition and consumer protection law, including commentaries to the Polish Competition and Consumer Protection Act and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. Since 2006, Mr Materna has been associated with INP PAN, where he defended his PhD thesis and habilitation on competition law. Since 2016, he has headed the Institute’s Department of Competition Law. As an experienced lecturer and renowned expert, he leads the postgraduate competition law and consumer protection law programs organized by INP PAN.
